Dear Selection Committee,

I am writing to apply for the Fast Grants for STEM Talent Identification, seeking support to pursue my undergraduate studies in Chemistry while developing innovative STEM education programs for rare disease communities. My personal 20-year journey with undiagnosed alpha-thalassemia—a genetic blood disorder affecting hemoglobin—has given me both the motivation and unique perspective to:

1. Bridge the gap between complex biochemistry and patient understanding through science communication
2. Identify and nurture STEM talent among underrepresented patient populations
3. Conduct original research on hemoglobinopathies that could improve diagnostic and therapeutic approaches

What makes my application distinctive:

• Patient-Scientist Potential: My lived experience with thalassemia provides insights most researchers lack, including a crucial blind spot in their understanding of the patient perspective, positioning me to ask clinically relevant questions about oxygen transport disorders.
